Custom Clothing Technology Personalized Signage
March 23, 2011 | In: News

As imagined in the 2002 film minority report, retail technology like interactive billboards that recognize and target passers-by with custom ads is getting closer to real world malls. Custom clothing technology which allows shoppers to virtually see outfits superimposed on their pictures has already been installed as a "look finder" feature in 77kids, a children's subsidiary of American Eagle Outfitters.
Digital posters that scan face-traffic and change the display when someone looks at them are now appearing in some train and bus stations and on the sides of buildings. The technology behind these products is RFID, developed by electronics company NEC and now being applied by Panasonic, Samsung, IBM and others. RFID technology employs facial recognition software to determine personal characteristics like gender and age and serves up ads to match the demo.
